DETROIT — School officials found a loaded handgun on a third-grader at an Inkster, Mich., elementary school after someone called in a tip Friday morning.

The principal at Daly Elementary received a call about 8:30 a.m., and school officials met the boy at the school entrance, said Val Hughes, executive director of instruction for Westwood Community Schools.

“We want to assure the community that the students of Daly Elementary are safe. No one was harmed,” Hughes said.

The Inkster Police Department had removed the boy and the weapon from the school by 9 a.m., she said.

“This is a very serious matter,” Hughes said. “I’m very proud someone told. That’s what we try to instill in our students. If someone has something that’s going to hurt someone, or yourself, or you see something that you consider wrong, share that with an adult.”

It is unclear why the child brought the weapon to school.
