White House: No to secession petitions – Kevin Cirilli – POLITICO.com
Bad news for those who wanted their states to secede after President Barack Obama was reelected: you’re stuck here.
White House director for public engagement Jon Carson responded Friday to the thousands of people who used Obama’s “We the People” online petitioning platform to call for secession, saying the Constitution gives people the right to change government through voting — but not seceding.
“Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States ‘in order to form a more perfect union’ through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government,” Carson wrote in an online release.
He continued: “They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot — a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it.”
